Our studio is growing and with that comes our first intern! We were humbled to receive so many applicants for the position, which made it a tough choice. But we are happy to say that Tera is joining the Nickles Photography team for the summer. Tera works at Eastmont School District as a counselor. She recently got into photography and love to take senior pictures for the kids that she works with. We loved her eager attitude and willingness to learn. We got along really well when we met and look forward to having her assist this summer at weddings and hope that she benefits from working with us!

Having an outstanding wedding photographer is a just half of the equation for your wedding memories. It is necessary to find a professional photographer whom you click with and love their style. You find them, have an amazing wedding and then… you just order the cd of images. Which you do nothing to little with. I am going to admit something I don’t want to admit, but I am all about honesty and integrity so here it goes: we only got the cd of images from our wedding and over 6 years later have yet to put them into an album. For a while I didn’t even know where the cd was. I was incredibly happy with our wedding photographers: Blaine and Bethany from Hood River. The pictures were wonderful and they were the best to work with. They were also my friends from photography college. Being such, they didn’t push an album on me. Over the years I have been sad when new friends come over and I have nothing to show them of our wedding. So maybe you do get the cd, but then grab a cheap company like Snapfish to put an album together. The pictures won’t look near as good and the colors will be off. I am thankful that we now have the capability to make a top notch album of our wedding now (and we will be creating one very soon!). When pricing out a photographer, don’t just look at the base price. Think about how you will want to display your pictures afterward. Decide on it before your wedding because soon enough it will be 6 years later and you might not have the chance.

This album is from a wedding venue in Leavenworth: Mountain Springs Lodge. It was a gorgeous vintage inspired Fall wedding. With our favorite wedding venues, we offer to make an album that showcases their setting. This is a show album we made for them. It looks a little different than a regular album spread for a client, which would include more family photos, a different title, and not all of our information on the final spread. But we thought this was a prime example of what you should expect of a wedding album when a venue offers albums of their preferred photographers to show couples.

There are a million, ca-gillion photography blogs out there! The information on how to take a photo and make money doing it is endless. Some of it is amazing. Some of it…not so much. For a new photographer or someone just wanting some basic information it can be overwhelming. I thought I would share with you my 5 blogs/people I follow and why. I only follow these blogs. I don’t have a lot of time in my day, so I do my best to keep things neat. I purposefully only follow these 5 blogs. It’s a little bit of everything and hopefully gives me a little bit of a well rounded view of what is happening in our industry as a whole. For those of you who like the way our photos look or how we run our business this might give you some insight on us. You will notice that I don’t follow wedding blogs. I might check random ones out when I see something special in my Facebook news feed, but overall I don’t find that by reading their material it helps me grow our business. If I am not doing something productive then I rather be watching a movie with my man or baking cookies with the kids!

1. Gray Photography I love Zach and Jody Gray. Probably a little too much! They are Christians who aren’t afraid to talk about their faith. They are about starting a business debt free and building it piece by piece as you make money. They also believe in quality lighting and shooting in camera with not a lot of photoshopping. You should check out their blog for all things photography including Tuesday Tips.

2. Outspoken Media (according to their site because I am still unsure how to explain it myself, lol) ” is a boutique SEO consulting company that specializes in fitting clients with customized integrated marketing strategies to amplify their voice on the Web”. I have very few blogs that I follow, but this blog is the only one I make sure to read every post. A lot of people think that I know a lot about SEO, ORM, and marketing. This is why. Actually, I don’t really know a lot. More like I can regurgitate what I just read and apply what I can to our company. Honestly, half of it goes over my head and I have to look up definitions of a lot of it. But I think it is good for me to learn SEO stuff from the SEO pros.

3. Flights of Fancy Betsy White makes wedding invitations and they have a blog for their inspiration. I love seeing the burst of color on my screen and it keeps me in the know of popular trends, colors, and fun ideas that I might keep in mind for a future styled shoot.

4. Daily Dilbert Comic Ok, after my speech about wedding blogs being a time-sick with no purpose to me, I can see that you might think me hypocritical with adding a comic strip to my day. But this will take 30 seconds and it is purposeful. It sets a happy mood and I like to be happy.

5. Scott Kelby’s Blog He is a great guy for talking in lamens terms when it comes to photography. His main thing is Photoshop and Lightroom. With a new version of Photoshop and Lightroom every year and updates every month it seems, I need a lot of tutorials! Although my goal is to shoot the best I can in-camera, sometimes I need Photoshop. I want to do it well and know the latest that Lightroom had going on (the software program that we edit 90% of our images in).

And there you have it! What are your favorite blogs? What am I missing out on?

Zach and Jody Gray are wedding photography team based in Nashville. They are some of the best people in the industry! We have been following them for the past couple years and we were beyond thrilled that they were willing to come to Leavenworth to teach their In-Camera Workshop. We love that they are all about getting the shot right, in camera. Not hours spent in front of the computer fixing mistakes or doing so many crazy things to images that they are dated in 5 years. It was an amazing 2 days of learning and growing. We learned some killer techniques we can’t wait to implement this summer! Emily and Haley were wonderful to work with and we couldn’t of asked for better weather! We will be posting some behind the scenes stuff later next week.

We have decided to ask one special person to be our number one support for weddings this summer! I always loved photography and actually shot my first wedding on my own when I was a senior in high school (something I wouldn’t recommend). If I had realized there were companies out there willing to let me glean all the knowledge they had about photography, I might not have need to spend the thousands that I did attending college. We decided to offer this experience to a dedicated person who is passionate about photography. You can be any age, but the key is that you are responsible, willing to learn, and reliable. You will get practical, hands on experience of what it is really like to run a photography business in Washington State. We focus on weddings and would prefer to bring someone on who is interested in weddings. You will be referred to as our assistant on wedding days. Your job duties will include but not limited to: hold light stands, carry gear, run small errands, hold reflectors. You will not be taking photos at the weddings. Since there are already two of us, a third would just be overkill However, we are happy to go out with you during the week and shoot together to help further your own work.

Q&A:

What qualifications do I need to be eligible? 1. Have a car to be able to drive yourself to the weddings. You will not be required to be there all day like us, so carpooling with us isn’t ideal. 2. To have a desire to learn photography 3. Be available and prepared to attend all wedding dates listed in the application. Please be aware that the weddings are located all over: Enumclaw to Ellensburg, Chelan to Leavenworth.

Do I have to be from Ephrata? No. We live here because we like it, but no one gets married here. We travel all over for weddings with half being in the greater Seattle area. You can be from anywhere in Washington State!

What is the time commitment? The set dates that we need are June 9th- August 26. We have weddings in September, but those would be optional depending on your school start date.

How many hours per week? Set hours are 4-6 hours at each wedding. There is optional time to work in our office to learn the business side.

Can I have a second job while interning for you? Yes! You are welcome to work somewhere else, as long as you are able to assist at the weddings.

Does this internship pay? No. This is designed to allow beginning photographers more real world experience and free education.

What is the Deadline? May 5, 2012

UPDATE: The Deadline is closed and the position has been filled! If you have photo questions and are a local photographer, no matter what level, we love to talk shop and help when we can. Feel free to contact us!

There is always room for growth. We just attended a workshop this past week that was awe-some! So excited to implement some new techniques this summer!

I was in Soap Lake at our friend’s house on a play date with my kids when we received a phone call from Texas asking if we do “events”. I usually wouldn’t of answered the phone while not in the office, but I thought it was a telemarketer and I wanted my name off the list. When I answered the phone I was thoroughly confused by the quick talking woman who had a brief description about photographing cargo that was going to happen in two days. After leaving the room with playfully yelling children, I asked her to repeat what she had just said. A big shipment that needed to be photographed. We happened to not have anything planned for that Saturday night and the shoot was just 20 minutes from our house. I said yes to the shoot simply for the quick, easy money (she said the photos couldn’t be edited due to the subject matter). After we confirmed that we would be there, the whole story came out. It was for Shell Oil, shipping special product by the world’s largest and famous airplane- the Antonov. For those that don’t know, the Antonov was a product of the Cold War, with the government trying to make a plane that would carry their space shuttle. Long story short (although a very interesting story- there are some great videos online about it) it is now a commercial plane owned by a Ukrainian company. It is run by a crew of men who fly around the world 3 months at a time. We can’t show any pictures of the cargo inside, but we can at least show the outside and show how unique, awesome, and gigantic this plane is! The supposed 3 hour shoot turned into 9. It rained and even hailed on us most of the day. But Ben, the airplane buff, was in heaven! Pretty sure Ben’s face hurt from smiling by the end of the day. We were there from the moment it landed until they packed the plane back up. The next morning it was off to Africa for the next big shipment for another company.

A 787 just happened to be test flying that day at Moses Lake. Ben captured the two planes together. Probably one of the only images like this out there.

With summer right around the corner, visions of white and tulle have begun dancing in our heads! Without a doubt you will be attending a wedding or two this Spring or Summer and will need to pick up a card for your bride and groom-to-be. I am not a super mushy person and it seems like every card I find is filled with way too much gushing and a lot of babys breath. We like fun an happy more than gushy. I wasn’t happy with the selection and with the suggestion of a fellow business owner, we made our own! We have opened a new section of our business for greeting cards. We picked one of our favorite images of all time and have turned it into a greeting card that is blank inside. We will be adding more to the collection over the coming weeks and will post those pictures soon. These are being sold exclusively at The Bookery in Ephrata.

Winter seems to finally be behind us! With the warm Eastern Washington sun on our faces, I took the kids for a long walk today. Yes! Spring is finally here. Most people assume that wedding photographers have little to do in the Winter, giving us time to catch up on life after a crazy summer of 60 hour weeks. Well… not so much! We thought we’d have a break, and by our blog it may look like we have, but that hasn’t been the case. Although we don’t photograph families, babies, or children, we work on commercial shoots in the Winter. A lot of the time we are unable to post pictures because of proprietary knowledge in the photos or it is for a specific job with photos not being able to be released until a set time and place. Now that a lot of those deadlines are done, I decided to show you some of what we did! It is a smattering of work with the one thing in common: it is for businesses who need documentation or photos for advertising a product. I really love commercial work. Seeing our pictures in brochures and websites is always fun, but more than that, I love hearing and seeing how other businesses in the wedding industry and outside of the industry function. Getting a taste of their marketing approach or hearing their start up story while we shoot is always encouraging and interesting.

Besides the commercial work, we have been spiffing up our website, helping multiple other companies on their sites, assisting my mom in a fashion show, planning for the 2013 Weddings at Lake Chelan Bridal Show, preparing for hosting a photography workshop in April, designing albums from our couples in 2011, engagement sessions for our 2012 couples, have begun meeting and booking brides for 2013, and shot 1 wedding in January and 2 in February.

We photographed a shipment for Shell Oil. We will be doing another post on Thursday on the Antonov shoot.

What to ask your wedding photographer. That may be one of the first things you search for when starting to look for a wedding photographer. Planning a wedding is a new venture to every bride and understandably most don’t know where to even start. There are a lot of great resources out there but some things are just plain illogical and yet brides take the advice from trusted resources like The Knot and make it their wedding bible. So I thought I would set the record straight in hopes of helping some of you out!

My number one question on the wedding blogs that irks me the most is this: How would you describe your photography style (e.g. traditional, photojournalistic, creative)?

You want to know why? Because what this says is that a bride can’t look at someone’s work and decided what the style is or if she likes the photos enough to see if the photographer is a potential fit. After pouring over images and deciding to contact the photographer the bide has to ask what their work looks like? It just doesn’t make sense. I am a person who likes to find a knowledgeable source, find a “how to” or “to do” list from them and cross things off the list to a T so I know what I am doing is right. I can be dense at times, so lists help me, lol. For brides like me, who want to check things off a list, this question could make or break an interview. To decide to want a specific style when the terms are so loosely used on both sides of the table… it is just kind of pointless. I am thankful to say that we don’t have brides who ask this question, which means one thing: our photography style is clear to every bride that contacts us. If you are a bride and after looking at a website and still feel the need to ask what the photographer’s style is… then don’t call them. Because it means they don’t know either! They may still be trying to figure out how they like to finish images and you may not know how your images will look.

A better question to ask is this: How would you describe your working style? Meaning, on the wedding day, how will they act? Are they about getting every shot and will stand on the stage and in the aisle front-and-center at the ceremony? What clothes do they wear and are you ok with that choice? Do they dance with guests at the reception to get the dancing shots (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing)? Are they more “behind the scenes” staying back except for the formals?

This question allows you to get to know the photographer as a person: how they work is a good insight to who they are as people. It’s important to like your photographer on some level- you will be spending your entire wedding day with them! Depending on who you are will determine what kind of person you want shooting your wedding more than the style.

So… here are some pictures we have taken. I grabbed at random, spending 2 minutes to pick them out. We have 3 words that aim for when shooting. What words come to mind when you look at these images?

As most of you know, my mom and sister own a bridal store in Bellingham, Washington. It is the only Bridal Consignment store in Whatcom county and one of the few in Washington State. A lot of their dresses are once-worn, but a good half of the dresses are brand new. A few bridal stores consigned their dresses when they closed their business, while others are simply because a bride decided on a different gown but couldn’t return it. This year, the organizer of The Simply Organized Bride asked my mom and sister to do the fashion show for the yearly bridal show. It was a big task! I offered to help and it was a very good learning experience for me, being a bridal show organizer myself. I ended up only taking a couple photos of the fashion show as they needed me to help in the back side of things, but here are some photos from the event. A second post will be coming soon with pictures of the models and dresses.

Here is my mom and sister’s booth. They sell other things besides dresses: including decorations, garters, veils, shoes, and everything in between. Ally, an employee at the store is in the back there, fluffing things up.

The models had their hair done “on the floor” during the show. Thank You to Samclaire for doing an amazing job with the hair. There was a lot of down time between the rehearsal first thing in the morning and the actual fashion show, hours later. The ladies had fun hanging out getting to know each other.

While some where getting their hair done, other where getting their makeup done. A big THANK YOU to Sarah Engel from Mary Kay for doing all the models’ makeup.
